What kind of music do you teach?
I teach music starting with the fundamentals and rudiments in the classical style, which provides a solid foundation in theory and technique. From there, we can explore either classical or pop genres, depending on your interests and goals.
What is the ideal age to start taking piano lessons?
The ideal age to start piano lessons varies, but most children are ready between 5 and 8 years old. However, adults can begin at any age, as it’s never too late to start learning, even though beginning music training in childhood is often considered ideal.
How long will it take me to learn to play?
How long it takes to learn to play depends entirely on you. Learning an instrument requires dedication, and progress won’t happen without regular practice. If you want to learn quickly and feel confident, consistent practice is key.
Here are a few tips:
- Weekly practice the task assigned to you by your music teacher.
- Play straight through your pieces, returning to the hard bits later.
- Or begin with the hard bits, practicing small sections thoroughly.
- What you can’t play slowly, you can’t play quickly.
- Stop if you get stuck! Return later and try again.
- Don’t practice your mistakes: always build “finger memory” before proceeding.
- Even if it was not assignment, practice your previous/initial work once a week.
- Enjoy what you’re doing, and mix it up by having other, simpler pieces on hand.
How long and how often are the lessons?
30, 45 minutes to an hour of tuition each week. The time passes quickly if you enjoy what you’re doing.
Do you provide external classes at the student’s home?
Unfortunately, I only offer lessons in my music studio in Alberton’s Verwoerdpark. Due to back-to-back lessons, I don’t have the availability to travel to student’s homes.
Do you teach total beginners, and do I need to bring my own instrument?
Yes, I teach total beginners. Most of my new students start with little to no musical knowledge, and it’s common to stay with the same teacher once you’ve established a good rapport, though circumstances like relocation or retirement can require a change. If you don’t already have an instrument, you’ll need one for practice. However, I don’t recommend spending a lot initially—starting with a basic keyboard is perfectly fine.
How can I assist my child in making faster progress?
To help your child make faster progress, show a genuine interest in their musical journey, even if you’ve never played an instrument yourself. Children naturally want to please, and your involvement can be a huge motivator. I welcome parents to sit in on lessons and encourage them to be engaged with what we’re learning. Since practice can be a solitary activity, your child will benefit from having you nearby—listen, offer comments, and provide encouragement during their practice sessions. Your support can make all the difference in their progress.
